We have a comprehensive
selection of bridges to satisfy many different tastes.
These bridges have been sized only for foot
traffic, not vehicles or commercial traffic, and
are designed for practical economy. No changes in bridge
sizes or specifications should be done without the
advice of an architect or engineer.
Early American bridges
were often financed by lottery or were privately funded,
with building costs recovered by tolls. In the
mid-1800's, the cost of an average covered bridge varied
from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the size. Bridge
carpenters were paid $.65 a day plus 3 free meals. Tolls
varied and were often changed at will. Charge accounts
were commonplace. There were special rates for doctors,
clergymen and large families. Itinerant peddlers
normally traded wares for tolls and access was free if
attending church.
We believe many of
today's small, light bridges can be made of wood; some
arched like rainbows over small streams or ravines; or
bridges just creating a quiet beauty and grace in a
garden.
